Sensornet
Sensornet is the name given to a new initiative from Geluidsnet and their partner DGMR, building on Geluidsnet’s well-established noise measurement service in the Netherlands. For Sensornet, Geluidsnet’s existing noise metering stations are used to monitor a wide range of other environmental indicators such as air quality or wind speed, with the same trademarks of accessibility and high-quality real-time measurement.
Background
By the end of 2005 Geluidsnet had made great strides since its beginnings in experimental noise metering, and was fully operational as a service provider. The demand for affordable real-time noise measurement was large and growing by the month, as a result of which the company was chiefly preoccupied with maintenance of its sensor network and installation of new noise meters.
At this point Geluidsnet took a fresh look at its organisation and recognised that its position would be strengthened by a partnership. DGMR, a Dutch engineering company, was selected, and in May 2006 the two companies started to implement a joint business plan under the name of Sensornet.
Sensornet measures the environment in the Netherlands real-time
The noise meters already set up by Geluidsnet will be equipped with additional sensors to measure a wide range of other indicators such as air quality, temperature, humidity, wind speed and even air constituents. The sound identification systems already in place will also be extended to quantify noise from other sources, such as road traffic, industry or outdoor events. Sensornet intends to have a network of more than one hundred such measuring stations operational by the end of 2007.
