What the Hack
Geluidsnet operates a low-cost network of air plane noise measuring units that surrounds Schiphol Airport in the Netherlands. The monitoring stations are housed by the local community; private people, schools and companies.
By placing the measurement stations within a kilometre distance of each other an overlapping network is created where you can watch a plane fly from one measuring unit to another.
The monitoring stations are Linux computers with a calibrated microphone attached to the sound card's microphone input. A DSL line is used to upload the measurements to a central database so that the results can be viewed real-time on our website.
Measurement reports are made available to local municipality. This enables them to discuss the development of air plane noise with the Air control officials based on their own measurements.
